Ever heard of lanolin? It’s a skincare ingredient that has been around for over 8000 years. First used in Ancient Egypt, Egyptians would place blocks of solid lanolin wax on their heads. When they contacted the sun, the blocks would melt dispersing the lanolin all over their faces, making their skin soft and moisturized. But things have changed since then. Lanolin is typically used in a cream form, it is an effective emollient that locks in moisture and prevents water loss (most notably used in nipple creams). Despite all of that, some people are fearful about using lanolin as it can irritate sensitive skin and cause reactions, my gran for one cannot use lanolin because of this. However, today, we explore lanolin in other forms.

So, what exactly is lanolin?

Lanolin is a substance derived from sheep’s wool. It essentially comes in the form of a yellow wax secreted from the sebaceous glands of sheep. Lanolin acts as a waterproof shield, protecting sheep’s skin and wool from any weather change, whether it’s rain, frost or snow. Lanolin used by humans is garnered from sheep that are raised explicitly for wool. The lanolin oil is extracted from the wool before it is processed to make products such as clothes. Please note: lanolin extraction does not cause harm to the sheep!
Despite being a skincare ingredient that has been around for centuries, lanolin has been placed on the back burner, until recently with the introduction of Lanolips.

Lanolips is Australia’s number 1 lanolin company that has been turning the heads of celebrities and beauty experts throughout the beauty industry. The brand itself has won over 50 global beauty awards which is unheard of for such a new brand. Lanolips use Ultra-Medical Grade lanolin within all their products, branding them as “Nature’s Wonder Moisturiser”. Now, medical-grade lanolin is used within the pharmaceutical industry, including hospitals, it is a much purer form of lanolin which is used for healing burns and wounds because of its strong skin compatibility. As well as this, the lanolin used throughout their range is scientifically proven to closely resemble lipids in human skin, meaning that it acts as a moisture magnet that holds 400% of its weight in moisture, allowing the skin to self-hydrate from within.

One product that I am absolutely in love with from Lanolips is their Lemonaid Lip Treatment. This is a semi-permeable, richly-whipped lip ointment which contains lemon oil that naturally exfoliates the lips and, of course, the star ingredient, lanolin which delivers the most intense hydration. I always apply lip balm to my lips before going to sleep, and with this one, I actually wake up the next day with the softest and supple lips. As well as offering lip products, they also have a range of face products and multi-purpose balms which can be used all over, on the face, hands and body. And if that didn’t tell you how good it is, the Lanolips 101 Ointment Multi Balm sells globally every minute!
