The Dental Brand Not Just Helping You, But the Planet Too — Fashion Killer

A few months ago, I wrote a piece all about sustainable beauty brands to watch out for; where I briefly mentioned the brand, I will be talking more in-depth about today. This is, of course, The Humble Co — a sustainable and eco-friendly oral hygiene brand doing every type of good to our planet.

The Humble Co. was founded in 2013 in Stockholm, Sweden by dentist turned entrepreneur, Noel Abdayem. He decided upon launching the brand after a voluntary work trip to Jamaica where he experienced the negative environmental impact of plastic waste, first-hand. He had a lightbulb moment of realizing that he did not know of any oral products that were not made from plastic and so The Humble Co. was born.

As well as influencing us to change our dental habits for the better, The Humble Co. is socially responsible too. For every product sold, they donate directly to The Humble Smile Foundation. The Humble Smile Foundation is a non-profit organization that seeks to increase awareness of and help prevent suffering caused by oral disease amongst children. They found that in a vast majority of oral disease cases, children tend to suffer from pain, tooth loss, missing school, disability, and impaired psychological and physical development. The foundation, thus, makes it their mission to support oral health outreach projects for people that are disadvantaged by economic or geopolitical inequality.

I was very lucky to be sent a few of their star products to try out and these are some of my thoughts. First up we had the Natural Toothpaste- Fresh Mint with Fluoride which I have to say was my favourite product from the range. Some of its star qualities include the fact that it is SLS-free (many kinds of toothpaste contain sodium lauryl sulphate which is the ingredient which makes them foam. Little do people know that SLS is extremely irritating for the mouth). Without SLS, the formula does not foam but that does not mean that it is not doing anything because it leaves your mouth feeling fresh and clean. As well as extracting out the SLS from the formula, this product is also vegan and cruelty-free which I think is super important to advertise as again, with your run of the mill toothpaste, a lot of them do contain animal products (I know what you’re thinking, this fact was quite a shock to me too!). Lastly, I have to mention the price. £2.99 for a foolproof toothpaste is a definite steal.

Next up, we have the Humble Brushes, the world’s most sold toothbrushes- for a reason. As you would have gathered already if you read my small feature on The Humble Co. a few months ago, I am an advocate for manual toothbrushes. I know, you’re probably booing me at this point, but let me finish. My only gripe when it comes to using and then eventually disposing of a manual toothbrush is the sheer amount of plastic waste involved. However, this, I can say with my fullest confidence, all changed when I was introduced to The Humble Co. Humble Brush. A brush designed with nylon bristles in all manner of colours and tensions; a handle made from 100% biodegradable bamboo (rest assured this does not affect the pandas! It means The Humble Co. only takes the bamboo that the pandas can’t reach from a height of 5 metres and above) and the best part? For every brush sold, (which has been 35 million to date) the company gives one to a disadvantaged child too.

My favoured Humble Brush would have to be the PROUD edition with soft bristles. It is a beautiful brush with rainbow bristles that is super gentle on the teeth and surrounding gums. This brush also is currently helping to support local LGBTQ+ communities with every purchase.

The last product I positively think is worthy of a mention is the fluoride-free Toothpaste Tablets. Toothpaste tablets for anyone unsure of what they are, are essentially toothpaste in solid forms, it is as simple as that. How you use them is also super easy, simply bite and crunch them, chew them until a paste is formed and then brush as you would normally. I think for me why I enjoyed the experience of using these so much was down to the fact that they are travel-friendly and come in a resealable & recyclable pouch meaning that you are guaranteed not to make a mess. Last but certainly not least, I find these as effective, if not more, than actual toothpaste. One single tablet equated to more than enough toothpaste for my brush. I definitely would recommend these little gems to anyone who loves a bit of ease when it comes to brushing your teeth.

To sum it all up, The Humble Co. is changing the landscape, figuratively speaking, for the oral hygiene industry as well as the greater good. In my opinion, this brand ticks all the boxes; they’re eco-friendly, they’re socially responsible and they offer the widest selection of truly effective dental products out there. Without a doubt, we should all be supporting their business if we want to support environmental change.
